Rick DiPietroWhenever it seems like things could not get worse for the New York Islanders, things get worse for the New York Islanders. The latest blow came on Friday when the team announced that top goaltender Rick DiPietro is going to miss the next four-to-six weeks. This occurred after DiPietro got into a fight with Penguins goalie Brent Johnson, or more accurately, he got into a punch. Johnson skated the length of the ice, threw one left hook and DiPietro was finished.

Andy Pettitte to retireNew York Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte will be hanging up his glove and will retire, ending what has to be one of the better MLB careers a player could have. Pettitte won five World Series rings (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2009) with the Yankees and is MLB all-time postseason winningest pitcher with 19 wins. He finished with a 240-138 record and 3.88 ERA in sixteen seasons, three with the Houston Astros and 13 with the Bronx Bombers. His candidacy for the Hall of Fame will be contentious as he did not win the magical benchmark of 300 wins, but 240 victories and an under 4.00 ERA in the Modern Era, as well as the rings and playoff wins, will make the voting close. However, that's all in the past and it's time for Pettitte to work on his future.

Troy Polamalu named AP Defensive Player of the YearPittsburgh Steelers defensive back Troy Polamalu was named AP's Defensive Player of the Year, Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews came in a very close second, losing to Polamalu by two votes. Both players are game-changers and helped lead the top two defenses in the NFL to this year's Super Bowl. However, Polamalu is probably more of a versatile defender, able to sack the quarterback and come up with a big-time interception or hit. Also, Matthews is only in his second season in the NFL and will have many years to win the award.

Bill BergenBill Bergen isn’t a name you would recognize. He was a catcher in the majors from 1901 until 1911. After playing three seasons with the Cincinnati Reds, he moved over to Brooklyn to suit up with the Dodgers for the rest of his career. What makes him notable though is his .170 batting average over 3,228 plate appearances throughout his career. This is a record for players with more than 2,500 plate appearances; one of many records that Bergen unfortunately holds.

Phil KesselNobody cared about who would go first. Few more care about whether the Sedin’s would be split up. What everybody wanting to know going into the NHL All-Star Draft was who would be left sitting alone on the floor before being the final “pick” of the draft. The inaugural honors went to Phil Kessel of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The humiliation of the title is being abated by a $20,000 donation to charity in his name and a new car for the Leafs’ forward.
